For decades, Los Angeles took a beating from East Coast writers and European critics who looked around and decided it lacked the one thing they understood: a traditional city center.

But that's always been the wrong read.

LA isn’t one city pretending to be something else. It’s a collection of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own history, architecture, traditions, and sense of belonging. You can only understand LA by learning its pockets.

So, this month, I’m beginning a new series that takes a look at some of those neighborhoods beginning with Mar Vista: a Westside community that’s easy to pass through on the way to somewhere else but deeply rewarding when you slow down and pay attention. I’m also reflecting on a powerful conference I attended in Denver with fellow Certified Senior Advisors and Compass Plus agents, where the conversation kept coming back to one essential idea: good guidance is rarely a solo act.

When Real Estate Isn't The Whole Story

A few weeks ago, I attended the Society of Certified Senior Advisors conference in Denver alongside 80 fellow Compass Plus agents. Some of the most meaningful conversations I had, however, were with professionals who don’t work in real estate: senior living advisors, healthcare advocates, financial and insurance professionals, aging-in-place specialists, and others who help older adults and their families navigate the realities of aging.

We asked many what inspired this work. Their answers were deeply personal: caring for a parent living with dementia, a grandparent who modeled compassion, or a family overwhelmed by a system they didn't understand.

Those conversations also reinforced something I believe deeply: while real estate may be an important part of an older adult’s transition, it is not the entire story. Families may also need to understand the financial implications, organize years of belongings, modify a home, identify appropriate care, or begin difficult conversations before a crisis makes the decision for them.

My goal isn’t simply to help someone complete a transaction. It’s to understand what an individual or family may need and connect them with knowledgeable professionals when immediate challenges arise. Through Compass Plus and the CSA community, those relationships now extend throughout Los Angeles and across the country.

None of us has every answer. The best guidance often begins with knowing who else should be at the table.

The Places That Make A Neighborhood

Mar Vista is one of those low-key Westside neighborhoods that rewards a closer look. It doesn’t have the national cachet of Venice or Santa Monica, and that’s part of the point. The appeal is quieter: Sunday mornings at the farmers market, the design legacy of the Gregory Ain tract, active local schools and civic groups, and a housing market that stretches from entry-level condos and cottages to $3M-plus new construction.
